OutKast’s Andre 3000, aka Andre Benjamin, stars as Jimi Hendrix in ‘Jimi: All Is By My Side’, the new biopic by Academy Award-winning writer-director John Ridley.
The movie only covers one year of the guitar legend’s life, when he was unknown playing clubs in New York before making his mark in London.
At the Los Angeles premiere, http://www.theguardian.com/film/2013/sep/12/all-is-by-my-side-hendrix-review-toronto Benjamin describes the film as a genesis story about a reluctant celebrity.
“Hendrix didn’t even want to sing, really. He didn’t want to be the frontman of the band. He didn’t even like his voice. So what we see in this film is we see this person, a human that grows from this talented guitarist. And the people around him give him that support. They tell him ‘Hey you’ve got to put more into it’. And he becomes the Hendrix that we all know and love,” said Benjamin.
The movie does not include any songs written by the guitar genius himself, as the filmmakers’ request to use them was denied by Hendrix’s estate.
Benjamin says although he did not grow up listening to Hendrix’s music, it left a lasting impression on him once he first heard it.
“My first Hendrix memory would have to be from ‘Apocalypse Now.’ I think I was in my late 20s, no early 20s. And I was watching ‘Apocalpyse Now.’ And there is a helicopter scene. I think ‘All Along the Watchtower’ was playing. That was my first Hendrix,” said Benjamin.
‘Jimi: All Is By My Side’ is on staggered release across Europe from October.
