Despite carrying an eight-match suspension Fernando Santos has been named the new coach of Portugal.

Whilst coach of Greece at this summer’s World Cup the 59-year-old was sent to the stands during the Costa Rica game and subsequently handed an eight-game ban by FIFA.

That has not put the Portuguese Federation off hiring him as Paulo Bento’s successor.

The former Porto, Benfica and Sporting boss could miss all of Portugal’s Euro2016 qualifiers and their first game at the tournament if his ban is upheld following an appeal.
