French President Francois Hollande is in Baghdad to lend support to the Iraqi government in its battle against Islamic State militants.
Paris looks set for possible airstrikes against IS positions as part of a US-led coalition: “Iraq is fighting an enemy, a terrorist group, that has no border, but territorial interests. They want to make war not only on Iraq, but to all people who don’t share this world view based on terror.”
The US has already launched over 100 airstrikes against the Islamic State, the UK has delivered humanitarian aid to those displaced by the fighting and several Arab nations have agreed to cooperate with Washington.
The CIA believes the Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria number 31,000, three times as many as previously thought.
