Vincenzo Nibali joined an elite group of five other riders at the weekend when he won the Tour de France to complete a career slam of the three Grand Tours.
Nibali dominated the 101st edition from start to finish and was out of the leader’s yellow jersey for only two days in three weeks.
Nibali told euronews: “I was strong in this Tour from start to finish. I won in Sheffield, Les Planches des Belles Filles, in the Alps and the Pyrenees. I also had a great result in the time trial.
‘‘Although I had already built up a healthy race before the time trial I could have managed it differently but nonetheless I did have a great Tour.”
Nibali is the first Italian since the late Marco Pantani 16 years ago to win the race and joins Jacques Anquetil, Felice Gimondi, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Alberto Contador in winning all three Grand Tours during his career.
