At least 17 dead as Israel steps up offensive against Hamas

Israel’s bombardment of the Gaza Strip on Tuesday killed at least 17 Palestinians and left dozens more wounded – according to Palestinian officials.

At least five children, were understood to be among the dead.

A spokesperson for Hamas stated that if Israel wanted a war, they would be ready.

Meanwhile five Palestinian fighters have reportedly been killed after crossing into Israel by sea and trying to attack an Israeli military base.

The Israeli army said more than a hundred rockets had been launched from Gaza by Hamas in the last 24 hours.

Israeli authorities have approved a motion to call up 40,000 reservists ahead of a possible ground offensive in Gaza.

In Tel Aviv there was panic when as sirens sounded, leaving people running for shelter. One rocket was understood to have been intercepted by the Iron Dome rocket defense system

Air raid sirens also sounded in Jerusalem.
