The United States Supreme Court has ruled that police cannot search the contents of a mobile telephone without a warrant.

Chief Justice John Roberts said there would be some emergency situations in a which it would be permitted.

The decision is a major victory in favour of privacy advocates who consider searching mobiles intrusion.
