Ukraine has declared a national day of mourning after pro-Russian rebels shot down a military transport plane, killing all 49 crew and troops on board.

The downing of the jet east of Luhansk was the biggest loss of life by government forces in their escalating battle against separatists in the east of the country.

Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko vowed to do what was necessary to bring the rebels to heal.

“I gave our armed forces a priority. It is to bring under control the border of Ukraine through which terrorists are bringing weapons, reinforcements, equipment and money,” President Poroshenko said.

Elsewhere, in the eastern port city of Mariupol, which was recaptured by government forces on Friday, five Ukrainian border guards were also killed and seven wounded in a shootout with separatists.
