Syria is holding a presidential election in government-held areas of the war-torn country.
Officials say turnout is set to be high. The vote is expected to deliver an overwhelming victory for incumbent President Bashar-al Assad.
Damascus resident Suheila al-Mohamad told reporters: “I voted because we had security and safety and Syria is mother of the world. By God’s will, Syria will return and be strong in the face of anyone who has challenged us.”
“These elections are an achievement. They complete the accomplishments of the army. May Syria stay well with its leader,” said Yusha Salman, another Damascus voter.
Rebel fighters have vowed to disrupt the election and Syria’s main Western-backed opposition is boycotting it.
