After a sharp increase in February, the number of job seekers in France rose only slightly during March.

There were 1,600 people newly registered at job centres during the month, bringing the total to almost 3.35 million, which is a new record.

Including those who are only working part time but who want full time employment the total was 4.94 million.

The number of under 25-year-olds without work fell, it was down 0.8 percent from the previous month and 2.6 percent year-on-year.

But there was a rise in unemployment among older people. The total increased 1.0 percent from February and was up 11.8 percent in the previous 12 months.

The number of long-term unemployed also went up to over two million. That is people who have been out of work for more than a year.
