Atletico Madrid failed to break down Chelsea’s defence as the pair were locked in a goalless stalemate after a drab first leg of their Champions League semi-final at the Vicente Calderon Stadium.

The Spaniards were playing in the last four of Europe’s top club competition for the first time in 40 years.

But Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea – who lost goalkeeper Petr Cech early on with an elbow injury – managed to hold their rivals at bay to hand themselves the slight upper hand heading into the second leg at Stamford Bridge, which takes place next Wednesday.
