Britain’s Lewis Hamilton outsmarted Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg to clinch a thrilling Bahrain Grand Prix, which saw Pastor Maldonado pick up a penalty following his late clash with Esteban Gutierrez.

The Venezuelan, who smashed into the side of his opponent’s C33 on lap 41, has been handed a five-place grid penalty for the next round in China and given three penalty points on his Super Licence.

Force India’s Sergio Perez was third in his first podium finish since 2012 with teammate Nico Hulkenberg having to settle for fifth place.

Rosberg is still leading the drivers’ standings with 61 points, 11 ahead of Hamilton with Hulkenberg currently sitting in third place, 22 points off the pace.
