Manchester United host defending champions Bayern Munich in the first leg of their champions league quarter-final tie on Tuesday.
United will be without winter signing Juan Mata who is cup tied.
Patrice Evra is suspended while right-back Rafael and striker Robin van Persie are sidelined as David Moyes and his men look to European competition to salvage an otherwise disastrous season.
Moyes said: “We go into the game knowing on our day we are as good a side as any, we have to show it more often than we have done, but I have great belief in the players I have said that from day one and it has not changed”.
Bayern Munich will be full of confidence after winning the Bundesliga title last week.
But coach Pep Guardiola who will be without injured Thiago Alcantara and suspended Dante, remains wary of the under-performing Red Devils.
He said: “When I see Rooney, Ferdinand, Vidic and Ryan Giggs, Wellbeck, Chicahrito… I know them very well, I know the qualities of these players. Maybe they played no good this season, I don’t know why because I am not here (in England) but for one game or two games they can make the best performance of the season and they can beat us.”
In the other quarter-final four times champions Barcelona entertain fellow La Liga title hopefuls Atletico Madrid in the pair’s first European encounter.
Coach Martino Gerardo has only one absentee for the match – goalkeeper Victor Valdes who has been ruled out for the season with a knee injury.
Otherwise he has a fully fit squad to choose from as Barca look to extend their record of having contested the semi-finals for the last six seasons.
On form Atletico Madrid – who currently top La Liga – are in the quarter-finals for the first time since 1997 and are aiming to reach the last for for the first time in 40 years.
Brazilian born Spaniard Diego Costa faces a late fitness test after picking up a knock in training on Monday while Javier Manquillo remains sidelined and Raul Garcia is ruled out through suspension.
