International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach arrived in Sochi on Friday ready for the 22nd edition of the Winter Games which get underway on February 7th.

The former Olympic fencer, who was elected in September to succeed Belgium’s Jacques Rogge, will chair a series of important meetings in the coming days aiming to reshape the future of the Olympic Movement

Despite concerns about potential attacks during the event, Bach insisted the 6000 athletes, coaches and officials will be safe.

Security has been the overriding concern in the build up to the Games, with the Russian government deploying more than 50,000 police officers and soldiers in the Black Sea resort.
