Looking at the Black Sea resort of Sochi and the spring-like weather conditions in the region it’s hard to image that in a fortnight the world’s best winter sports athletes will descend upon the city to compete for gold.

But the city and the locals are gearing up for the 22nd staging of the event, which is the most expensive Games in Olympic history including the summer Games.

In total president Vladimir Putin and his government have spent 37 billion euros on the event – more than all the other winter Olympic budgets combined.

Security is not the only cause for concern at the event – Russia’s ban on gay propaganda among children, has drawn strong criticism from Western states.

Although Russia has said gay visitors will be welcomed if they respect the country’s laws.
