Colombia striker Radamel Falcao is likely to miss this summer’s World Cup after it was confirmed by his club, Monaco, he will have to undergo surgery on his knee.
The 27-year-old suffered a lesion on his left knee cruciate ligament after scoring for Monaco in a French Cup last 32 tie with amateur side Chasselay Monts d’Or Azergues in Lyon.
Although Monaco did not elaborate on the length of Falcao’s absence, an injury of this kind followed by surgery usually requires up to a six-month recovery period.
Not only will his absence be a blow for Columbia at the World Cup finals in Brazil this summer but also to Monaco’s Ligue 1 title hopes.
The principality club are second in the league five points adrift of leaders and reigning champs Paris Saint Germain.
