Eight pilot whales stranded on New Zealand’s South Island have been put down.

The whales beached themselves twice in two days. Efforts to re-float them were unsuccessful and they were shot by the Department of Conservation to avoid further suffering.

The area is one of the worst in the world for whales to get beached.
