French first lady Valerie Trierweiler is to be discharged from hospital today after being admitted on Friday for rest and tests.

Media speculation has it that she has been shaken by reports of an alleged affair between President Francois Hollande and an actress.

The woman said to be at the heart of the scandal is Julie Gayet. The president has not denied the reports but has protested at the invasion of his privacy.

The alleged liaison centres on a Parisian flat, according to the magazine Closer.

Hollande faces the media on Tuesday for the traditional new year news conference when he is scheduled to talk about the French economy.
