Olympic downhill champion Lindsey Vonn will not defend her title at next month’s Winter Games in Sochi due to a knee injury.
The four-time overall world cup champion would have been one of the marquee names to feature at the Olympics at the Russian Black Sea resort.
But the American announced this week that her knee is just ‘too unstable to compete at this level’.
The 29-year-old was sidelined for 10 months with a serious knee injury suffered in last February’s World Championships in Austria.
She returned to action late last year but has struggled to fully recover following a series of injury setbacks to the same knee.
Vonn said she would have surgery soon in order to be fit in time for the World Championships on home snow in Vail, Colorado next year.
