The Spanish King’s traditional Christmas Eve address did not go to air live on Catalonian public TV for the first time in its 30 year history, and the restoration of the Spanish monarchy.

It highlights growing separatist feeling in the North Eastern region.

Ironically King Juan Carlos called for Spanish unity.

“For many years, we have walked side by side building our democracy. Together we have resolved problems even more difficult than the ones we face today, and always with the same objective:- to reach a common goal.”

Catalan nationalism used to lean more towards greater autonomy while staying within Spain

Recently, a more radical independence movement has grown up, and polls suggest half of Catalans would vote for full independence.

But Madrid says a proposed referendum next year would be unconstitutional, and has vowed to block it.
