Work has begun on a new base in Romania that will form part of a controversial US ballistic missile shield.

The Deveselu base is scheduled to become operational in 2015.

The US State Department said the shield was a NATO response to “the increasing threats posed by the proliferation of ballistic missiles from the Middle East”.
