Best-selling novelist Tom Clancy has died in a Baltimore hospital, according to US media reports.

Representatives for Clancy were not immediately available to comment.

His Jack Ryan series, which included ‘The Hunt for Red October’; ‘Patriot Games’ and ‘Clear and Present Danger, ‘inspired several Hollywood movies.

His first published novel, ‘The Hunt for Red October’, sold more than five million copies.

The novel was made into a successful film in 1990, starring Alec Baldwin as Ryan. Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck also went on to play Ryan in other screen adaptations.
