Police in Austria have surrounded a farm building where a gunman has barricaded himself in.
Reports now say earlier he shot dead four people: three police officers and an emergency worker.
The man, a suspected poacher in his fifties, had been approached overnight in a forest near Annaberg about 100 kilometres southwest of Vienna.
One report said he then shot a member of Austria’s specialist intervention forces before turning the gun on a medic who was trying to treat him, and another police officer at a roadblock.
A third police officer held hostage was later found dead.
The gunman reportedly fled to his home.
Hundreds of police have been sent to the area.
Police said several shots had been fired outside the house and no contact with the man had been made.
