Swimmer Diana Nyad has become the first person to swim from Cuba to the United States without a shark cage.

The 64-year-old set off on Saturday and took 53 hours of non-stop swimming to cover the more than 160km that separate Havana from the Florida Keys.

Speaking on the beach just minutes after finishing her record breaking swim Ms. Nyad said:
“I’ve got three messages. One is we should never, ever give up. Two is: you’re never too old to chase your dreams. Three is: it looks like a solitary sport, but it’s a team.”

She wore a special silicone mask, a full bodysuit, gloves and boots to protect her from jellyfish stings. An electrical field was also generated around her by special equipment to avoid shark attacks.

This was her fifth attempt at crossing the Florida straits.
