A candidate for an Australian anti-immigration party has quit the general election race after a number of gaffes in which she said Islam was a country and Jewish people follow Jesus Christ.

Stephanie Banister from the One Nation Party has faced ridicule since making the comments in an interview on Australian television on Wednesday.
