Italy’s Luna Rossa overcame a nervous start to edge out Artemis Racing by two minutes and clinch Race 1 of the Louis Vuitton Cup semifinals at San Francisco Bay on Monday.

The Swedish team took the early advantage and looked set for an easy win before Max Sirena’s men stepped it up a gear heading towards the second mark, giving them a major boost ahead of the second race which gets underway on Wednesday.

The victory gives Luna Rossa the early lead in the best-of-seven series that will determine who faces Emirates Team New Zealand in the Louis Vuitton Cup final.

The winner of that series will then lock horns with defending champion Oracle Team USA in the 34th edition of the America’s Cup which kicks off in September.
