A couple have been killed and their one year old baby seriously injured after the cable car they were travelling on in Switzerland fell 30 metres onto rocks below.

The car was heading downhill from Alp Baerlaui in the central swiss canton of Schwyz when it came off the cable on Saturday afternoon.

The couple died in the fall. The baby, who was being carried in a rucksack, was partially protected but still suffered serious injuries.

Police say the cable car was designed for transporting goods and was not supposed to carry people.

It was not immediately clear what had caused the accident, but local police spokesman Florian Grossmann said they are looking at whether it was overloaded: “Under investigation is how many kilos this transportation cable car could carry. What is clear is that this cable car is not supposed to carry people but to transport goods.”
