Buddhists have been offering up prayers for the Dali Lama’s seventy eighth birthday.
Born in nineteen thirty five he is recognised as the thirteenth incarnation of the spiritual leader.
He currently resides in India, where Tibetan exiles celebrated him with ceremonies and prayers.
For exiles in regions controlled by China, celebrations were muted, as they are not allowed to display any images of their leader.
The Chinese government see the Dali Lama as a violent separatist and are wary of his followers.
