Ex-wife Winnie says Mandela's condition 'greatly improved'

The former wife of Nelson Mandela, Winnie Madikizela Mandela, has said that the former president’s health has seen an improvement.

She spoke to crowds gathered outside the Mandela’s home in South Africa, telling them: “I’m not a doctor but I can say that from what he was a few days ago there is great improvement. But clinically he is still unwell.”

Outside the Pretoria hospital where Mandela has spent more than 20 days being treated for a lung infection, the crowds keep a constant vigil.

South Africans are coming to terms with the fact that the man who led defiance of white minority rule and forged the post-apartheid “Rainbow Nation” won’t be with them forever. But no-one is ready to see him go yet.
