“Monsters University” is the latest release by Disney/Pixar. It follows the runaway success of the 2001 movie “Monsters, Inc.” but this time the story goes back and tracks the college relationship of unexpected heroes Mike and Sulley – before they became friends.

Director Dan Scanlon admitted the fun that appears in the movie didn’t exactly mirror reality: “Plenty of partying, plenty of wild, crazy monster stuff going on. They are college students, but they are monsters. But, yes, our college experience was very different. We do a lot of research at Pixar, so we went and looked at colleges all over the country.”

Billy Crystal and John Goodman return from the first installment to voice the two characters. Crystal spoke about the experience of returning to voice Mike Wazowski after more than a decade: “I watched the first movie again, just to hear him. I knew who he was, and his frantic energy – and tried to harness that into who he was before that. And it was one or two passes with a couple of lines and then once I hear his (actor John Goodman’s) voice, and we’re together, then it’s just…it’s a pair of slippers.”

The film is out in the UK on 12 July.
