The mayor of Makhachkala, in the Russian republic of Dagestan, has been detained on suspicion of being involved in organising the murder of a senior state investigator.

Said Amirov, 59, has been mayor of the violent town of Makhachkala since 1998.

Amirov has survived several attempts on his life and has been using a wheelchair since an assassination attempt in 1993.

Dagestan is an epicentre of an Islamist insurgency in the North Caucasus, where bombings and shootings take place frequently.
