Taksim Square fell eerily quiet after the police moved out. It was still crowded, but the tension dropped almost palpably. It was a stark contrast to the fierce clashes between police and anti-government protestors that has marked the last two days.

Turkey’s President Abdullah Gul urged peaceful demonstrations and called on those in power to “pay attention to different ideas and concerns.” He also hoped security forces would be more sensitive and advocated dialogue as a solution.
