A man, believed to be right-wing historian Dominique Venner, committed suicide in Notre Dame cathedral in Paris on May 21.

Police said a man shot himself beside the main altar shortly after 16:00 (CET).

The man has not been officially identified, but police sources named Venner.

Earlier in the day, Venner published a blog entry strongly criticising France’s legalisation of same-sex marriage.
