It is curtains closed for a Nazi-themed Wagner opera in Dusseldorf.

The ‘Tannhäuser’, which had been running at the Rheinoper opera house, was cancelled after audience members reportedly became sick due to scenes depicting murder and a gas chamber.

Despite this, director and actor Burkhard Kosminski refused to make any changes for artistic reasons.

Kosminski told reporters: “I think in a play and also in an opera you have to create concrete situations. And if it is only romantic trash it has no relevance”.

The controversial production, which created violent protest on its opening night.

Although it has now been shut down, concert performances of music from the opera will continue as planned.
