The 115 cardinal electors who will decide the next man who will lead the world’s Roman Catholics celebrated the “Mass for the Election of the Supreme Pontiff” in St Peter’s Basilica as they prayed for divine guidance for their task ahead.

It is their vote which will shape the future of the Roman Catholic Church. Beyond the solemnity of this occasion are millions of faithful who are hoping and praying for a leader who can inspire them and take the church forward after a succession of scandals.

This afternoon the cardinals will don their vestments once more and walk in procession to the Sistine Chapel singing the Veni Creator. It is then the conclave will begin.
