The Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has sacked Health Minister Marzieh Vahid Dastjerdi. She was the only woman in his cabinet and the first female minister in the history of the Islamic Republic.
No official reason has been given, although Dastjerdi’s dismissal has been linked to her criticism of government colleagues.
The import of medical supplies has become more expensive as the value of Iran’s currency has plummetted, in part due to international sanctions.
Dastjerdi had complained that this situation was leading to shortages of essential medicines and her department was underfunded.
