The men were shot dead and another two injured when they went to put out a house fire in Webster, upstate New York.
Police believe it was a deadly trap, with a lone gunman luring the firefighters to the house for an ambush.
Webster’s Police Chief Gerald Pickering said, “Upon arrival, the firefighters all drew fire. All four firefighters were shot at the scene. One firefighter was able to flee on his own.”
Pickering also said the shootings show the need to address gun control and mental health issues.
The suspected gunman was found dead at the scene. Police report that the wound was self-inflicted. The suspect, in his sixties, was on supervised parole after serving a prison sentence for the manslaughter of his grandmother.
