A gunman in the USA killed his own mother before descending on a primary school where he opened fire killing 20 children and six adults.

It happened on Friday morning at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

The suspect, named as 20-year-old Adam Lanza, committed suicide at the scene according to officials. His mother had been a teacher at the school.

One witness said she heard over a hundred shots when the shooting started just after nine o’clock. 18 children died at the scene and two others in hospital.

“It’s not a simplistic scene, as you can certainly understand”, said police spokesman Lieutenant Paul Vance. “We need to establish identity, we need to document the entire scene, we need to answer every single question to find out exactly how and why this incident occured. As the governor said, we will be here through the night, certainly through the weekend, we are not even putting a time stamp on it as to when we will complete this project. We’ll work with the medical examiner’s office, we have to establish a positive identification (on victims), and, again, there’s a great deal of work that needs to be done here at the school”.

Scores of police officers arrived on the scene and made a full search of the premises and surroundings.

Other schools in the district were put on immediate lock-down as a preventative measure according to officials.

The killer is said to have been dressed in black, wearing a bullet-proof vest.
