Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has made a rare public appearance along with other political and sporting figures in Qatar for the Doha Goals Forum.
The initiative is to capitalise on the fact that international sport is no longer focussed on Europe but is becoming more global.
An example of that was the awarding of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar.
“… with others I wanted this choice to be made. Why? Because we needed to wait until the 21st century for a Muslim country to organise an event of this importance for the first time,” said Nicolas Sarkozy.
The event which has been organised by French businessman Richard Attias hopes to bring all corners of the world together through the power of sport.
Reporting for euronews François Chignac said:
“For sure there are business leaders as well as political leaders, and of course there are traditional and modern sports but what matters here at this forum is to find a way to allow sport to offer diplomatic, economic and social solutions in many regions of the world.”
