The Russian government is considering a ban on smoking in public places in an effort to cut the number of smokers in the country by half.

The prime minister Dmitri Medvedev said he deplored the fact that with a third of the population hooked, Russia has become the smoking capital of the world.

He said almost 400,000 Russians die each year from smoking related causes.
