Directed and co-written by Scott Derrickson, Sinister follows true-crime writer Ellison – played by Ethan Hawke – as he moves with his wife and children into the house that was previously occupied by a family who was murdered.

The film also stars Vincent D’Onofrio and Juliet Rylance.

Scott Derrickson, who also directed The Exorcism of Emily Rose, said: “‘The Exorcist,’ ‘The Omen,’ ‘Rosemary’s Baby,’ in 1980 ‘The Shining,’ they were all very scary films and they were all movies with real characters and real dramatic relationships. To me if you can get an audience to invest in those real relationships, than the scary parts become far more scary.”
