Southwestern China has been hit by two earthquakes leaving as many as 50 people dead and thousands of homes destroyed.
Authorities say tens of thousands of people have been evacuated from the area after a series of aftershocks added to the chaos.
The first quake hit close to the border of Yunnan and Guizhou provinces at around 11am local time, the second followed 45 minutes later.
Seismologists say the earthquakes were shallow with an epicentre less than 70 kilometres below the surface.
Shallow quakes can cause widespread destruction
the movements measured 4.6 and 5.6 in magnitude.
Buildings in agricultural areas of China are often constructed without regard for regulations and are susceptible to earthquakes.
