A hot air balloon has crashed in Slovenia, killing four people and injuring more than 20 others. Reports in the country’s media say eight remain critically ill, and six children were among those hurt.

The balloon carrying 32 people including foreign and local tourists came down at around 8 o’clock this morning about 10 kilometres south of the capital Ljubljana. Hospital authorities say the injured include a British woman and three Italians.

It was not immediately clear what caused the crash.

Witnesses have been quoted as saying the balloon got caught in a storm and hit a tree as it tried to land. One said the basket fell quickly, ejecting some passengers before the balloon took off again and caught fire.
