Police in the United States have named the man they suspect opened fire at a Sikh temple in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, killing six people and wounding three others.

He is Wade M. Page, a forty-year-old army veteran who police shot dead at the scene.

He is known to have had links with white supremacists and was the singer in band that played racist songs. He had a 9/11 tattoo on his shoulder.

The victims were five men and one woman ranging from 39 to 84 years in age. One of the wounded is a police officer who had been helping another victim when he was hit.

“These kinds of terrible, tragic events are happening with too much regularity for us not to do some soul searching and to examine additional ways that we can reduce violence, said President Barack Obama.”

No doubt the availability and legality of weapons will come under scrutiny. The state of Wisconsin has some of the most permissive gun laws in the US

The shooting follows the massacre of 12 people in a cinema by a gunman in Colorado just over two weeks ago.
