Great Britain kicked-off their Olympic football campaign with a disappointing 1-1 draw against Senegal while group A rivals Uruguay needed a late strike from substitute Nicolas Lodeiro to earn all three points against the United Arab Emirates at Old Trafford.
In group B, Gabon striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang cancelled out Admir Mehmedi’s early opener to salvage a point against Switzerland while Mexico were held to a frustrating goalless draw by South Korea at Saint James’ Park in Newcastle. This result sees the four sides all tied on 1 point each.
Elsewhere, Manchester United forward Rafael, Damiao and Neymar all struck as Brazil edged out Egypt 3-2 while Dmitry Baga’s first half header was enough to hand Belarus a narrow 1-0 victory over New Zealand in Coventry.
And in group D, ten-man Morocco held on for a 2-2 draw against Honduras while Japan produced the first upset of the tournament when they beat potential gold medallists Spain 1-0 at Hampden Park.
La Roja, among the favourites to repeat their 1992 Olympic success when they won gold as hosts in Barcelona, are now bottom of their group and will next face Honduras on Sunday.
