It has been confirmed Gabriel Garcia Marquez is suffering from dementia.
Rumours about the health of the Colombian Nobel-prize winning author of One Hundred Years of Solitude have circulated for some time.
His brother Jaime added the 84-year-old whose other titles include Death in a Time of Cholera and Chronicle of a Death Foretold, had also stopped writing.
Garcia Marquez was diagnosed with lymphatic cancer in 1999, from which he eventually recovered. But according to Jaime the effects of chemotherapy had brought on an early onset of dementia which he said runs in the family.
