Greece’s newly-nominated finance minister Vassilis Rapanos has resigned due to ill health.
It is a blow for the government less than a week after it took office and ahead of a crucial EU summit where Athens aims to soften the terms of its international bailout.
The 64-year-old was rushed to hospital on Friday before he could be sworn in, complaining of nausea, abdominal pain, and dizziness.
Greece’s new Prime Minister Antonis Samaras is also too unwell to attend the summit which starts on Thursday, after undergoing emergency eye surgery at the weekend.
The premier has chosen Foreign Minister Dimitris Avrampoulos to represent Greece at the summit, along with outgoing Finance Minister George Zanias.
