The French Socialist Party have achieved an absolute majority in the French National Assembly after a second round of parliamentary elections.
The result means that the Socialists now control the Senate, most regional governments, the presidency and now the National Assembly. The outcome gives new President Francois Hollande a strong hand to play as the eurozone continues to wrestle with the financial crisis.
“You have chosen continuity” said France’s Socialist prime minister Jean-Marc Ayrault . “The pledges made by the president can now be realised and the harmonious work of all the branches of public power will be assured. You have confirmed your desire for change. The government, to be named this week, will act effectively to bring about the economic renaissance of our country, supported by our majority in the Senate and parliament. With this, we can deliver long-term solutions,” he added.
