US President Barack Obama has taken a break from the campaign trail to visit the new skyscraper being built on the site of the Twin Towers in New York.
The building being erected was known as the Freedom Tower, but is now called ‘One World Trade Centre’.
Remembering those who were killed when the original Twin Towers were attacked on September 11, Obama and his wife Michelle wrote messages of encouragement on a beam that will be used in the construction. He also thanked the workers at the site.
The couple toured the unfinished 22nd floor of One World Trade Centre, along with officials from both main political parties.
The group included New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, New York governor Andrew Cuomo and
New Jersey governor Chris Christie, who is a top ally of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.
