Pope Benedict the sixteenth’s butler has been arrested following a scandal that has been dubbed ‘Vatileaks’.
A senior Vatican source has confirmed the man detained is 46-year-old Paolo Gabriele, who has served the Pontiff for six years.
Gabriele is suspected of leaking confidential documents to the Italian media. Some of the papers that have made their way into the press include the Pope’s personal letters.
Other documents allege cronyism and corruption with regard to Vatican contracts.
It was accusations of financial wrongdoing like this that led to the head of the Vatican bank Ettore Gotti Tedeschi being removed from his post on Thursday. Tedeschi is also under investigation for money laundering.
Since the leaks began in January, Pope Benedict has ordered several investigations trying to find the source.
There was even a report one of the leaked documents claimed a plot to assassinate the Pontiff had been uncovered.
