Turkey says it has no plans to extradite Iraqi Vice-President Tariq al Hashemi on terrorism charges despite Interpol putting him on its most wanted list.
The international police website has posted its so-called ‘red-notice’ for al-Hashemi at the request of Baghdad, but Turkey’s government refuses to arrest him.
“He came here for medical treatment,” said Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag. “I don’t know if we will make another evaluation on the issue in the near future but as the Turkish government, our stance on the issue is clear. We will not extradite someone whom we have supported since the very beginning,”
Al-Hashemi is said to be staying in Istanbul after fleeing Iraq in December when the Shi’ite-led government there accused him of running death squads. Al- Hashemi, who is a Sunni Muslim, has denied the allegations saying they are politically motivated.
